My Pepeha

 Guide to a Pepeha

  • Waka: How did your family get to New Zealand.

  • Maunga: What is the mountain close to your marae/awa.

  • Awa: What is the river that is close to marae/maunga. If you do not know your maunga, do your moana, which is ocean/sea.

  • Iwi: what group of people does your family belong to? Could be a village.

  • Hapū: smaller group inside your iwi. Could be land owned in another country.

  • Marae: carved buildings belonging to your iwi or hapū.

  • Koro: grandfather (Papa)

  • Kuia: grandmother (Nana)

  • Rāua: mother (Mum)

  • Mātua: father (Dad)

Ko Whirinaki te awa.

Ko Ngapuhi te iwi.

Ko whirinaki te hapū.

Ko Moria te marae.

Ko William tōku koro, ko Denise tōku kuia.
