a letter from the war to home

Pacific Islanders in
WW1

WALT use descriptive language to add detail

A group of soldiers from New Zealand and Australia went to fight in the war.
They were known as the ANZACs (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps).
Some Pacific Islanders went to war too.

Task 1: Watch the videos about the Pacific Islanders who went to war.

Task 2:

Choose a Pacific Island:
Tonga
Samoa
Cook Islands
Fiji
Niue

Research your chosen Island and write some vocabulary about it:

Task 3: Pretend you are someone from your chosen Pacific Island who
has volunteered to serve in World War 1.
Write a letter to someone back home.
  • What do you miss from home? [Research your Island for this]
  • What is your job?
  • Where are you and how did you get there?
  • What do you smell, hear, see, touch, taste?
  • When will you be home?

Start writing here:
_______________

Dear Mum and Dad, I have been here for 4 months now.
I'm missing my job as a  teacher.
I also miss you.
I'm at Gallipoli.
We came on a warship.
Trenches are the worst they stink and the food we eat is stale
and mouldy food. Soldier’s are fighting soldier’s and bodies are
in the trenches.
There are rats stealing our food.
I care and I don't care because it’s stale and mouldy.
the food tasted grubby and yuck like it’s been there for 12 million years
when dinosaurs were still alive.
But it was only 4 months old.
When i first touched the bed it was kind of nice except it was very
uncomfortable i’ll probably be back in 1918 so see you then
